The Problem of Haptic Lag in Commercial Arcade Props

In competitive target tagging and interactive sports simulators, physical tactile feedback must sync with audio and lighting within 20 milliseconds to feel authentic. Traditional eccentric rotating mass (ERM) motors suffer from mechanical spin-up inertia of 40–90ms, causing player taps to feel spongy and delayed.

The PlayerLabs PulseForce board solves this by deploying linear resonant actuators (LRA) driven by Texas Instruments DRV2605L controllers with auto-resonance tracking and reverse-polarity active braking.

Closed-Loop Auto-Resonance Tracking

An LRA operates as an underdamped spring-mass resonator with a sharp Q-factor. If driven even 2Hz away from its natural resonance frequency (typically 170Hz to 205Hz), tactile acceleration drops by over 60%. The DRV2605L continuously samples the back-electromotive force (Back-EMF) during zero-crossings, automatically adjusting drive frequency to ensure peak G-force output across varying ambient temperatures.

Active Reverse-Polarity Braking

To produce crisp, sharp clicks instead of prolonged buzzing, the controller applies an instantaneous 180-degree out-of-phase braking pulse upon waveform termination. This cancels rotor momentum in under 8.5 milliseconds, delivering crisp mechanical tactile confirmation that mirrors physical mechanical switches.
